Light Fossil Studios: The (Ghost) Cement Ship
The cement ship has been aground at Seacliff Beach for the past 70 years or so. I was built from rebar and concrete in the San Francisco Bay (Port of Oakland) and was designed to serve as a fuel tender for the US Navy's WWII fleet. It never saw service. When the war ended, an entertainment consortium bought it and towed it 50 miles or so to Seacliff Beach in the Monterey Bay. Once scuttled, it was converted to a grand ballroom and casino, complete with a restaurant, bar, and swimming pool....and here it still is. Storms and corrosion caused the ship to break up, but for several years, it served as a hot spot for Hollywood film stars and high rollers. Now it has been taken over by seals and cormorants and you can no longer walk out on the ship; however, many people still fish off the pier that was built to connect the ship to the shore. I went to shoot it today because it was foggy and that makes the cement ship seem really ghostly.
